ESIC ESIC

What is ESIC

The ESIC Scheme is a comprehensive social insurance initiative established under the Employees' State Insurance Act of 1948. It safeguards employees, as defined in the Act, from the risks of illness, maternity, disability, or employment-related injury, while also ensuring access to medical care for insured individuals and their families.

Applicability of the ESI Act

The ESI Act applies to 'Factories' with 10 or more employees, whether powered or not. It also extends to Shops, Hotels, Restaurants, Cinemas, Road transport, and Newspapers with 20 or more employees. In some states, it covers Private Medical and Educational Institutions with 20 or more employees. The wage limit is Rs. 15,000 per month (excluding overtime). It covers all of India.

Eligibility

  • Employees within a covered unit with monthly incomes under Rs. 21,000 (excluding overtime, bonus, leave encashment) since January 1, 2017, qualify for Scheme benefits.
  • Disabled employees earning up to Rs. 25,000 per month (if hired after April 1, 2008) are eligible.
  • Those directly employed by the factory or through a contractor for factory-related work also qualify.

Employee Registration / IP Number creation

ESIC employee registration must be completed within 10 days of joining to avoid issues with Insurance number generation. Starting from October 1, 2019, late registrations can lead to show cause notices. Ensure you provide accurate mobile numbers and bank account details for all new employees during registration.

ESIC Challan Payment and Due Date

Pay your ESIC contribution conveniently! You can deposit both the Employee's and Employer's shares with State Bank of India using an online generated challan. Don't miss the due date on the 21st day of the following month. Online payment is a breeze, and if your daily wage is up to Rs. 70, you're exempt from the employee's share. Employers pay 4.75% of their employee's salary. The State Govt. contributes to medical benefits within a per capita ceiling of Rs. 1200 per I.P. family per annum.

Contribution and Benefit Period

Employers covered by the Act must make monthly contributions. There are two six-month contribution periods and two corresponding benefit periods. We make about 40 lakh individual payments, totalling around Rs. 300 crores in cash benefits each year.
